´One of Portugal's best kept secrets' - Gordon Ramsey on Colares Wines

Colares Wines are unique for various reasons:

   

  1. They are some of the oldest wines in Portugal, dating back to year 1255
  2. A large part of the vines grow deep in sand dunes – a detail that protected them from the 1865 phylloxera plague 
  3. They get their special taste from the harsh coastal climate (westernmost vineyards of continental Europe)
  4. And most recently: the world famous chef Gordon Ramsay just featured the Colares Wines in the National Geographic program Uncharted, calling the wine ‘one of the best kept secrets of Portugal' (Watch the trailer here) !


Colares wines are some of the oldest wines in Portugal

The Colares wine region is the smallest demarcated wine region of Portugal (DOC Colares).  The wine culture goes back to 1255 when king D Afonso lll ordered wine to be planted.  Supposedly the Ramisco vines came from northern France, Boulogne region, where the king had previously lived.

Dug deep like in trenches covered with sand, they lay on top of the ground almost looking abandoned.  There is no trellising systems – the vines grow low due to the sea winds and are protected by hand-made palisades of dried canes sewn together with wicker.   They survived the 1865 plague of phylloxera, as the bug could not reach the roots through the thick of sand. Because of this, the Colares Ramisco vines are some of the oldest vines in Portugal. 


The uniqueness of the taste of these wines is due to the closeness of the sea 

The climate is very harsh, with moderate temperatures, strong sea winds and a high percentage of air moisture.  

The Ramisco wines take a long time to mature, a minimum of 18 months, but often up to 6-8 years, in wooden barrels and the bottle.  Its aroma is complex, with hints of nuts and red fruits.  The production is quite small, with no more than 20 000 bottles per year. The typical white Colares wine is Malvasia (of Greek origin); a fresh and citrine wine with fruity and floral aroma, that has even a smaller annual production of about 15 000 bottles a year.  The small production of these high quality wines have made this region a special treat for the connoisseurs!

When you walk around Sintra and Lisbon you cannot but notice and wonder about some beautiful old buildings that look like they are abandoned and/or falling apart. It saddens many to see the potential of these houses going to waste just sitting there with broken or boarded up windows, roof half falling and the garden overgrown. Chalet Biester - the film set for Johnny Depp's 'Ninth Gate'

Just a bit above the village, in our view, there is a mansion called Chalet Biester.  Its black roof with turquoise trimming causes a lot of questions and awakes the curiosity of many Sintra visitors.  No, it cannot be visited; yes, it is a private house.  No, I don't know who lives there now; yes, it is where the Roman Polanski  thriller ' The Ninth Gate' was filmed, starring Johnny Depp.  There and a bit of everywhere in Sintra. Oh, the wonderful Pastries and Bread!

As I have mentioned before, I frequently walk in the mornings with my dog; up and down the hills, into the forest and mountain roads. Recently there has been an extra burden on my walks. It is lent, the 40 days between Carnival and Easter. Tradition says you give up something for those 40 days that is like an addiction. Some people give up coffee, others chocolate or cigarettes. I decided to give up bread and pastries made with white wheat flour. And this is the reason that climbing up the 400 meters to town is now doubly difficult: the bakeries and pastry shops open their doors even before Pandora and I take off from home, so we walk up to town with the irresistible scent of freshly baked goodies lingering over the town center, calling my name - which I am patiently (more and less) ignoring.
