The traffic has changed in Sintra!

For a nicer, friendlier and safer place for residents and tourists alike, new traffic regulations are in place in Sintra to stop the huge volume of cars. The Historic Center is now almost car-free. Many streets were changed to one-ways, and the traffic in many of them has been restricted to authorized vehicles only.  Who is authorized?

Residents – up to two cars are allowed by residence to get a permit to circulate and park in the historic centre.
Business owners – up to three cars are allowed to get a permit to circulate and park in the historic centre.
Special Permit owners: there are two types of special permits – circulation only and circulation and parking. Circulation only is meant for those who for instance drop their children off to school in the restricted area.  Circulation and parking permit, or ‘Do not disturb’ is a permit for those who want to drive to and park in this area. Each accommodation can request a limited number of these permits that are paid.
These permits must be requested, paid for and displayed in the front window of the car to avoid (heavy) fines.

The parking lot of Casa do Valle fits 8 cars, including 2 electric cars, even Teslas
Casa do Valle is located in a privileged place at the edge of Historic Centre.  There is only one way to drive to us (passing the city hall), and there is no problem for those who come with a car, if a parking space is requested and confirmed in our free parking area.  We have a parking space for 5 normal cars and parking and charging station for 2 electric cars, including Teslas. In case that you are not OK to walk the 500 meters up the hill to town and want to drive and park in town; or want to avoid driving around Sintra and prefer driving through the town to the mountain and the monuments, you can acquire one of the paid permits through us. The daily 5€ value includes parking allowance and fees in town.

GPSs – Please use on-line GPSs to make sure you are getting correct traffic information.  Google Maps, Via Michelin and Waze are correct in instructing you to us.  However, even these are not trusted unless you have the permit, as they will not know whether you do, and will assume you do.  Always observe and give priority to the traffic signs!  We have maps and instructions for driving in Sintra to share with you once you have arrived to us.
Of course we would encourage you to leave your car parked in our parking lot or to arrive with public transport and explore Sintra by foot or by bicycles.  We have a garage for bikes, rent electric bikes, and can also arrange for road and mountain bike hires if asked before you arrive.
